Rehabilitation After an Orthopedic Surgery
The rehabilitation process will begin approximately two to fours hours after the surgery. Depending on the type of surgery that your undergoing, your care team will get you up and moving as soon and as safely as possible. Your surgeon will then work with nurses, physical therapists and other medical professionals to get you on a rehabilitation plan that is build just for you. Once you are home, you will do an at-home rehab program, receive in-home physical therapy, or complete a physical therapy program at a facility. The main goal of any of these rehabilitation programs is to increase your range of motion, improve your function, and build strength and mobility. The recovery process after any orthopedic surgery takes time, some patience, and setting expectations that are realistic. It’s important to talk to your physician about the typical recovery time of your operation in addition to the long-term limitations and the short-term limitations the surgery may have on you. Your surgeon can help educate you on the recovery times, requirements and expectations for your specific surgery and personal condition.
Physical and Occupational Therapy After Orthopedic Surgery
For many orthopedic surgeries, physical therapy or occupational therapy is required. Your surgeon may provide you with light physical activity that gets you walking and moving the area as much as possible. If you need additional assistance, your surgeon may have you sign up for an in-home therapy program with a therapist for one-on-one physical or occupational therapy. Another option for rehabilitation is outpatient physical or occupational therapy. The goal of these therapies include:
- To help you learn how to walk or stand again after joint replacement, ACL reconstruction surgery, or other surgeries on the hip, ankle, knee, foot or back.
- To train your muscles to work with your nerves again.
- Restore your strength, balance, mobility and range of motion or the affected joint.
- To learn how to use assistance devices like canes and walkers.
- To help you learn how to adapt equipment and items you use on a daily basis
- Assist you in performing your daily living tasks like getting dressed, taking a bath and more.
