What type of spine surgery does Eminent Medical Center offer?

Table of Contents

Thanks to the not very optimal adjustment humans made to gravity when they started walking on two legs, the spine is a major source of pain and discomfort. Bad posture, sedentary lifestyles, obesity and sometimes bad genetic luck all contribute to various pains in the back and the neck. Because of this, our board certified doctors and medical staff at Eminent Medical Center in Richardson, Texas and the Dallas/Fort Worth area are pleased to offer spine surgary for those who need it. The types of spinal surgery we offer include:

Orthopedic Spine Surgery
Orthopedic spine surgeons specialize in correcting the disorders of the bones in the spinal column. This can include arthritis, trauma or injuries caused by playing sports. They also treat bone tumors and such spinal malformations such as scoliosis, which is a curvature of the spine. Some surgeons focus exclusively on the spine while others also treat joints elsewhere in the body.

Neurological Spine Surgery
Our neurosurgeons are also trained in orthopedic spine surgery, but they focus on treating problems with the central nervous system. This means treatment not just of the vertebrae but of the spinal cord that runs through them and the nerves that branch out from it, including the sciatic nerve. This is the largest nerve in the body and branches out from the lower spinal column to run down the legs and into the feet. A pinched sciatic nerve is a common cause of shooting pains down a patient’s leg and lower back pain. Neurological spinal surgeons can also treat disorders found in the brain and disorders of the blood vessels inside the skull and the spinal column.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery
Though minimally invasive spinal surgery can’t be used to treat every problem with the spine, it’s becoming more and more popular. During minimally invasive spinal surgery, the doctor makes several tiny incisions around the surgical site instead of one large incision. They use miniaturized tools and a tiny camera that’s connected to a monitor, which guides the surgery. The surgeons may also use fluoroscopy, which is a type of X-ray that lets them see the structures in the spine that need to be corrected.

The benefits of this type of surgery are that there is less bleeding, less risk of infection, and the patient’s recovery period is lessened considerably. In some forms of minimally invasive surgery the patient can go home after a period of rest in one of our recovery rooms. They do not have to spend a night or two at the center as is the case for open surgery. Their recovery time can take a few weeks as opposed to a few months.
